Creating dolls for use on a web site or in an email signature is a growing trend, especially among the younger set.  Within that trend, more and more of the dolls are animated dress up dolls swf.  Swf is the extension name for files that have been created using Macromedia Flash, a program that makes static images move (among other things).  Dress up dolls swf are simply avatars made by a doll maker program, which are then run through a Flash program to create movements.

The one downside to using dress up dolls swf is the longer load times.  SWF files are larger (sometimes a lot larger) than .jpg or .gif files that show static images.  This can make web pages load slower.  Perhaps of bigger concern, it can also trip email filters when the swf file is added to an email message and sent to friends.  The large file size often gets the entire message shunted to the spam folder or deleted.  So, be careful and test before you use it!
