Silicone Doll Heads
Silicone Doll Heads – Life-Like & Tough
Doll makers place life-like appearance and long-term durability near the top of their list of priorities. Since the bodies of the dolls people collect are fully clothed when on display, special attention is paid to the face and head, which are usually not covered. For this reason, doll makers often create silicone doll heads. There are several reasons why silicone doll heads are preferable.
First, the skin on silicone doll heads is very similar in appearance and texture to human skin. This tactile property is extremely important to serious doll collectors, as well as children who often receive dolls as gifts they’ll cherish for years.
Second, silicone doll heads, while made from a form of synthetic rubber, do not emit the typical ‘rubbery’ odor. Again, for aesthetic reasons, this is preferable to the other materials used to make dolls - plastic, vinyl, or rubber.
Silicone doll heads are also the best at taking and holding colors that make up the facial features. Silicone holds the special paints and lacquers used by doll makers better than other materials. Even after years of ownership – even with fairly rough use – silicone dolls often look brand new.
Along these same lines, silicone doll heads are extremely resistant to compression and deformation. Kids are often rough on their playthings, dolls included. They’re naturally curious and will experiment by pressing fingers (and other objects) into the doll’s head and face. One of silicone’s most attractive properties is its ability to take that kind of punishment without losing elasticity. The head always returns to its intended shape.
Finally, silicone doll heads can handle extremes of temperature. If your child (or a forgetful adult) leaves her doll in a hot car or outside in the freezing cold, the silicone will not be damaged.
